Ariz. panel to weigh changes for school tax creditPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- A committee of Arizona lawmakers is scheduled Thursday to hash out what the full Legislature should do to provide more accountability for a tax-credit program that helps pay for Arizona students to attend private schools.
The special House panel will decide its recommendations after reviewing proposals submitted by its members.
The committee met several times this fall following newspaper investigations last summer found there is minimal oversight of the 12-year-old program. It provides dollar-for-dollar individual income tax breaks for donations to scholarship groups.
The newspapers' findings also found there is no requirement for groups to consider students' financial status and that some groups
permit donors to earmark donations for specific students.
