Motorcyclists to get pass on emissions tests?Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Motorcycle owners could soon be able allowed to skip emissions tests that are currently required on all vehicles registered in Arizona.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality believes testing the cycles is more trouble than it's worth and has asked federal authorities to exempt them from testing in the Phoenix area.
According to statistics from the state, motorcycles make up less than 4 percent of all vehicles tested, and fail less often than they used to. According to a recent analysis, fixing motorbikes that do fail doesn't significantly improve air quality.
State officials say tailpipe emissions from cars, combined with dust and ozone pollution, is the major contributor to the dirty air in metro Phoenix. That pollution is often serious enough to trigger health advisories.
