BUCKEYE -- The Lewis prison complex west of Phoenix was placed on lockdown Wednesday following a fight involving approximately 100 inmates.

Eight inmates and a corrections officer were injured in the fight, which broke out around 9 a.m. and lasted for about 10 minutes. It took place in the high-security Buckley Unit and was confined mostly to the recreation area and the kitchen.

The prison warden said the incident started with one fight, which led to several other smaller fights and then spread. She said corrections officers were able to get most of the inmates to stop fighting, but a chemical spray was used to subdue some of the inmates.

The corrections officer was attacked with a food tray but has only bumps and bruises. Five inmates were flown to area hospitals, and three inmates were taken to the hospital by ambulance. All inmates have been treated and returned to their cells.

The prison will remain on lockdown through the weekend.
