Police: Shoppers murder a reminder to be vigilant

PHOENIX -- Police say a senseless murder is a reminder about the increase in crime during the holiday shopping season.

They believe it was a botched robbery that ended with a 48-year-old woman being shot in the head outside a Kmart Monday night. She was apparently shopping alone when she was killed in the parking lot on Third Street and Baseline Road.

Officers want you to be extra vigilant.

"We've got Black Friday coming up here pretty quick, people are going to be out at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning," said Phoenix Police Detective James Holmes. "I would caution when they do that, that they are in groups, that they remain in well-lighted areas."

Police also say keep your hands free and don't linger in the parking lot.

They're looking for a black man in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 pounds, last seen wearing a black hoodie and jeans. He was reportedly seen in an old gray Chevy pick-up.

Anyone with information about this deadly shooting should contact the Phoenix Police or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
