Company set for hearing in employer-sanctions casePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The first Arizona business facing a civil complaint under a law that prohibits employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants is scheduled for a court hearing on Wednesday.
Scottsdale Art Factory is set for a status conference in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Prosecutors filed a civil complaint last week against the company under Arizona's nearly two-year-old employer-sanctions law.
County Attorney Andrew Thomas says the company's manager used "subcontractor" who was an illegal immigrant to avoid the law's requirement that employees be legal workers.
Thomas says the manager directed an illegal immigrant to create a company specifically to circumvent the law, and that sheriff's investigators have her on tape saying she was trying to beat the system.
