9 P.m. Extra: Congressional Travel

Posted: Updated:

Trips to Scandinavia, Italy, the South Pacific — all on jets set aside just for them. We're not talking about Wall Street executives; we're talking about your congressmen and women.

Because Congress is not required to report actual costs if they use airforce jets set aside for their use, we estimated flight costs.

The Wall Street Journal estimates the jets used, cost between $3,000 and $12,000 an hour to operate. We used the $3,000 dollar figure.

For flight times, we used commercial flight times where available, and estimated others based on distance.  We used only flight time, not time the plane was on the ground. We looked at travel reports filed form 2007 thru present.
