Escaped sex offender caught in CaliforniaPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Authorities say a 40-year-old sex offender who escaped from a state mental hospital in Phoenix more than a week ago has been arrested.
According to the Arizona health department, Jorge Murillo climbed two razor-topped fences to escape Oct. 17.
Six days earlier, authorities say, Murillo had completed a 10-year sentence in Arizona's prison system for sexual assault and was placed in the state mental hospital for evaluation.
The health department says the U.S. Border Patrol captured Murillo Friday in California's Imperial County.
Arizona health officials say Murillo is being held by the Imperial County Sheriff's Office, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is expected to take custody of him.
Before his escape, Murillo was to be transferred to California to begin a 16-year sentence for several sex crimes.
