Larry Frederick, SC Advocates for the Arts, says the “Charles Mingus Project” was created in 1993 by the
Tucson Jazz Society.  He says it was taken on a few years ago by SCAA, since Nogales is the birthplace of
the legendary jazz bassist.  He says each April, as near as possible to Mingus birth date, a festival is
staged in Ambos Nogales. A fund raising concert featuring the Original Wildcat Jass Band is scheduled
Nov. 13.  Frederick says SCAA’s main goal is to expose students and the community to a variety of music
and to enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of the art of jazz music.
