PHOENIX -- National Guard Staff Sgt. Thomas Rabjohn was laid to rest Friday flanked by colleagues, family and friends.
Rabjohn died a heroic death Oct. 3 in Afghanistan, trying to protect his fellow soldiers when an IED detonated.
About a thousand people gathered Friday morning at the Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria to say their goodbyes.
Rabjohn's peers from the National Guard and the Phoenix Police Department came out in force to lead him to his final resting place.
Chief of Police Jack Harris said Rabjohn leaves a void in the Phoenix Police Department that can't be filled.
Rabjohn was buried at the National Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
