MESA -- Mesa police are looking for a man who attacked two teenage girls near Broadway and Signal Butte roads Wednesday night.

Police say the girls, ages 15 and 16, were on the playground at Dwight Patterson Elementary School at approximately 8:30 p.m. when they were approached by a man with a small knife.

Detective Michael Melendez  said the man demanded one girl's phone and then grabbed one of the victims and pushed her to the ground. The other girl started to walk off and the suspect left the first victim and grabbed her.

Both teens were able to run away from the area.

The suspect fled with the cell phone in an unknown direction. The phone was recovered not far from the incident location.

Melendez said a man matching the general description of the suspect was interviewed but is not considered to be a suspect at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.

The suspect is described as a white male, 40 to 50 years old, average height, approximately 200 pounds with short gray hair. The man's face was covered by a possible bandanna and he was wearing a blue shirt and unknown colored pants.
