PHOENIX -- One person was killed when a plane went down just west of Deer Valley Airport Friday afternoon.

According to Ian Gregor with the Federal Aviation Administration, a single-engine experimental plane departed from the airport and crashed in a steel scrap yard about one-half mile off the runway.

Gregor said the only person on board the plane was killed. No one on the ground was injured.

The plane is registered to an Irvine, Calif., man.

The Phoenix Fire Department confirmed that crews were called out for a plane down and on fire.

Deer Valley Aiport is located at 19th Avenue and Deer Valley Road.

The FAA is investigating the crash.
