Body of overdue hiker found in Grand CanyonPosted: Updated:
GRAND CANYON - Park rangers found the body of a man in the Grand Canyon after his wife told police he was overdue on Monday night.
The body was discovered in an area below the North Rim of the Grand Canyon near Toroweap Valley.
The man had reportedly begun a day hike on Monday at about 9 a.m. on the Lava Falls Route trail. He planned a hike that would take about 3 hours.
Rangers were in place Monday night for an early morning search on Tuesday. An aerials search was also conducted and the man’s body was located on the lower end of the route just off the trail at about 9:20 a.m.
The man’s body was taken to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office. His name and hometown state are being withheld pending notification of family members.
The National Park Service is investigating the man’s death.
