Ariz. legislative leaders say vetoes crossed linePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Arizona legislative leaders say they're putting Gov. Jan Brewer on notice that some of the line-item vetoes she cast on budget bills were unconstitutional.
Arizona governors are only allowed to line-item veto appropriations, but Senate President Bob Burns and House Speaker Kirk Adams said in a recent letter to Brewer that some of her line-item vetoes instead targeted clear "policy determinations made by the Legislature."
Burns and Adams say they'd normally sue to challenge the line-item vetoes. But they say they aren't because they don't want to divert attention from critical budget issues. They say the decision not to sue shouldn't be consider a precedent.
Brewer's spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment.
