PHOENIX -- People in a north-central Phoenix neighborhood are on edge after a woman was raped in their gated community.

Police say the 28-year-old victim was taking out trash early Wednesday morning at her home near 11th Avenue and Greenway Road.

Officers say a man grabbed her from behind and took her inside her home where he sexually assaulted her at knifepoint.

"She did put up a good fight," Phoenix police Detective James Holmes said. "She struggled against him trying to keep this from happening to her."

Paramedics took the victim to the hospital to be treated for her injuries.

"I just hope that they find the person because anybody who does anything like that has got to be pretty sick in the head," said neighbor Rosalind Belmont.

Belmont said the victim moved into the area only days before the attack.

The suspect is described as a bald, heavy-set white man between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing green-and-white striped basketball shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department.
