Man assaults tanning salon employee then kills himself

PEORIA -- Police say a suspect who sexually assaulted a tanning salon employee in Peoria Monday died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

According to Mike Tellef with the Peoria Police Department, a man entered Glo Tanning at 83rd Avenue and Lake Pleasant Parkway at about 10 a.m. Monday.

A 20-year-old employee told police the suspect, identified as Timothy Lasby, 48, held her at gunpoint and escorted her to the back of the store where he sexually assaulted her.

The victim told police that she struggled with Lasby and his handgun went off several times.

The employee was able to escape. She told police that she did not know the suspect.

Officers surrounded the business and evacuated nearby stores as a precaution.

SWAT officers entered the business and found Lasby dead in the bathroom with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

Sunrise Mountain High School, which is located just north of the scene, was on lockdown for about an hour.

Police are attempting to determine what may have led to the incident.
