7 people hurt in overnight hit-and-run DUI wreck - Seven people were hurt in an overnight hit-and-run wreck involving an alleged drunk driver.
It happened right around midnight near Scottsdale and McKellips roads. Scottsdale Road was closed in the area for several hours.
According to police, the alleged drunk driver was trying to make a U-turn when he plowed into a truck. That truck was overloaded, carrying seven people.
Two of the victims were thrown from the truck on impact. One woman was in critical condition when she was taken to the hospital. Three other people were also taken to the hsopital.
Police said the fact that the truck was overcrowded likely contributed to the injuries.
"They were all young adults," said Lt. Noah Johnson of the Tempe Police Department. "Obviously, it was more people than the seat belts could handle."
Investigators said the alleged drunk driver who caused the wreck went home and tried to report his vehicle as stolen. Police, however, were able to use that information to track him down and take him into custody.>
