Man wanted in '97 stabbing arrested in GilbertPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A man wanted in a 1997 homicide in Phoenix was arrested Saturday after a traffic stop in Gilbert.
On April 12, 1997, police say Wenceslao Gonzalez-Estrada, 41, stabbed Uvaldo Vargas-Alonzo, 37, near Central Avenue and Broadway Road in Phoenix and fled the area.
A warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Saturday morning, Gilbert police Officer Robert Griffin conducted a traffic stop in the area of Pinto Drive and Roanoke Street in Gilbert.
Detective James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department said the suspect identified himself to the officer and a subsequent check revealed the warrant.
Gonzalez-Estrada was taken into custody without incident and released to Phoenix police detectives. He was later booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail.
Holmes said it is unknown where Gonzalez-Estrada may have been for the past 12 years.
Phoenix police are continuing the investigation.
