PHOENIX -- A man wanted in a 1997 homicide in Phoenix was arrested Saturday after a traffic stop in Gilbert.

On April 12, 1997, police say Wenceslao Gonzalez-Estrada, 41, stabbed Uvaldo Vargas-Alonzo, 37, near Central Avenue and Broadway Road in Phoenix and fled the area.

A warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Saturday morning, Gilbert police Officer Robert Griffin conducted a traffic stop in the area of Pinto Drive and Roanoke Street in Gilbert.

Detective James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department said the suspect identified himself to the officer and a subsequent check revealed the warrant.

Gonzalez-Estrada was taken into custody without incident and released to Phoenix police detectives. He was later booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail.

Holmes said it is unknown where Gonzalez-Estrada may have been for the past 12 years.

Phoenix police are continuing the investigation.
