Forget White Castle and don't even mention Harold and Kumar. Sliders have gone gourmet — topped with foie gras and enjoyed with a nice glass of wine. At least that's the scenario at Stax, a bright white burger bistro that draws restaurant industry types as the evening wanes. What do they like, besides the hours? Probably the budget-friendly prices, the excellent wine list (which features many great labels by the half-bottle) and the sheer fun of the concept. The sliders (served on fluffy MJ-baked buns) come two ways: build-your-own or pre-designed. Do-it-yourselfers can choose from seven grinds (including lamb, ostrich, turkey, buffalo and vegetarian), nine cheeses, various house-made condiments and aolis and a host of toppings, including caramelized onions, applewood-smoked bacon and guacamole. The ready-made burgers come in better combos than you could probably ever dream up (how about lamb with feta, grape tomatoes and tabbouleh?), and the sides (especially the creamy mac & jack, made with pepperjack cheese) and the short rib baked beans are soooo yummy. At Stax, it's fun on a bun. Lunch and dinner daily.
