Flavors of Louisiana

I know, I know. A quick-serve operation housed in a strip mall doesn't sound like the sort of place that would crank out terrific Cajun food. But I'm hear to tell you, at Flavors of Louisiana, it's the real deal. Jennifer Goff (formerly of Baton Rouge) runs the place with the help of her daughters Holli and Amanda, and they couldn't be sweeter people. More importantly, Jennifer's down-home cooking is well worth a drive to Avondale. You won't find a better po'boy in town, served on crunchy toasted French bread and dressed with tomato, lettuce and remoulade. Meat po'boys are available, but the best fillers are oysters, shrimp or crawfish. Stop by for Thursday's special -- Crab Landry -- an open-face po'boy glossed with sweet, onion-y crab stew and strewn with fried shrimp. Or drop by on Saturday's for sensational Dunkin' Catfish: fried catfish smothered in crawfish etouffee. Both are out of this world. Of course, you'll also find gumbo, jambalaya and boudin balls. Save room for dessert, maybe peach cobbler, banana pudding or cheesecake with praline sauce. All are sinful. Lunch and dinner Tu-Sa. $-$$
