Nogales vs. Sahuarita

Posted: Updated:

Entering week 3 of the high school football season, the Nogales Apaches and Sahuarita Mustangs put their undefeated records to the test against each other this Friday in the HS Gametime Game of the Week. Nogales is looking to prove that last season's 9-2 finish was no fluke and starting off 2008, it looks as though they have found their winning ways once again. Head coach Vince Villanucci uses a running attack featuring (arguably) the best running back in Southern Arizona with Senior Andy Garcia. Garcia ran for 1578 yards and 17 touchdowns a year ago. Right now he's on pace to crush that mark and reach the 2000 yard plateau following a 133 yard/4 touchdown performance against Rio Rico (didn't have a carry in the second half), followed by a 292 yard/4 touchdown effort against Douglas. The question now can he duplicate those kind of numbers against a Sahuarita team that has more experience after one season in the 4A Division.

The Apaches are cautious not to overlook the Mustangs, considering Sahuarita led by 10 points with a minute to play in last season's match-up before Nogales came through with the 28-24 victory. Sahuarita has a capable running back of it's own in Allonte Singfield. Singfield exploded against Cholla last week running for 252 yards on 14 carries with 5 touchdowns. As a team, the Mustangs have to be ready to prove they belong amongst the elite at the 4A level. Despite a 6-game losing skid in the middle of last season they finished off the year with a 3-game winning streak, and have carried that into 2008 after last weeks shutout of the Chargers. We all know running backs do not win games on their own; therefore the silent story of Friday's game will be the young men in the trenches (offensive/defensive linemen), and how they will stop the guys on the opposite side of the ball.

As always, I love talking about numbers because that's all we have to go on until kickoff Friday night, but in the end all that matters is if the kids have their chinstraps buttoned tights and somebody is ready to hit. I can't wait to see who's going to take the early season momentum, because one team is going home with a loss and the other will get another chance to prove why they are undefeated for at least one more week. See you at the game.
