Brophy at Salpointe

Posted: Updated:

This week's game of the week features a pair of 5A division powerhouses in the Brophy College Prep Broncos and the Salpointe Catholic Lancers. The Broncos are arguably the biggest measuring stick for the Lancers during the non-conference part of their schedule. Since 2005 Brophy has won 4 of the 5 meetings between the schools, defeating Salpointe twice last season (Week 1: 33-17 / 1st Rnd of Playoffs: 21-0) .

Even though Brophy sports one loss on their record, don't think Dennis Bene's Lancers expect Friday night's game to be less challenging. Salpointe's 2-0 record is a well earned mark this season considering they are still a young team that has fought hard to win against 5A juggernauts Basha (14-6) and Gilbert (20-17). The Broncos are the defending 5A Division One state champs and will give the Lancers all they can handle, and then some. They have a defense that returns All-State linebacker Matt Padilla and defensive end Trent Murphy who is a D-1 college recruit. While the Lancers offense looks to have it's hands full, you can be sure seniors Trevor Eggleston (QB), Christian Ramirez (RB), and Mike Descisciolo (WR) will lead the charge as their experience and on-field leadership have a huge impact during the game. Did I happen to mention that both are ranked amongst the Top 10 teams in the state? Brophy is #7, Salpointe at #8. I thought that might add a little satisfaction to your football taste buds before kickoff Friday night. See you at the game.
