Tohono O'odham officials discouraging pilgrimagePosted: Updated:
Officials with the Tohono O'odham Nation are recommending that members of the nation not make the annual pilgrimage to the Church of St. Francis in Magdalena, Mexico, due to the threats of violence in the area. For a number of months the region has been experiencing heightened violence between competing drug cartels.
In addition, the Nation has made transportation available to those members already in the Magdalena area who would like to return to the U.S., and say that many members have chosen to return to their homes. Members of the Nation have taken part in the annual pilgrimage to Mexico for hundreds of years.
