Sabino vs. CienegaPosted: Updated:
Winning your respective region, along with a nice amount of power points is a good way to guarantee a high seed selection when the post season rolls around. 4A Kino Region powers Sabino and Cienega will be vying for those two things this Friday when they meet in the HS Gametime Game of the Week. Both teams are riding two game winning streaks and both have had to manage the ebb and flow of the regular season.
The Cienega Bobcats have outscored their last two opponents 85-17 since a heart-breaking, turnover-filled loss to the Canyon Del Oro Dorados 3 weeks ago. Quarterback Seth Mejias-Brean is the leader of the offense and the team. He has passed for 1179 yards this season with 9 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the best in Southern Arizona (he has also ran for 8 TD's).
Sabino was humbled 2 weeks ago losing to Amphi 7-6, and last week they had to claw their way back from a 13-point 4th quarter deficit earning a 35-33 nail-biting victory against the Nogales Apaches (on the road). I'm sure the Sabercats learned a lot about themselves when looking adversity in the face. Senior running back Scott Brown has been the backbone for Sabino this season leading the team with 11 total touchdowns (9 rush, 2 rec).
Sabino has the upper-hand in their last two meetings, winning 35-31 in 2007, and 16-14 in 2004. In '04, the Bobcats finished the regular season as Kino Region Champions, while the Sabercats returned the favor last season. Both squads sit at 2-0 in the Kino Region this year; therefore we'll have to see who is prepared to make the biggest plays under the lights in Vail. See you at the game!!
