Shakedown weekendPosted: Updated:
Listen up southern Arizona high school football fans!!! This is gonna be somewhat of a shakedown weekend for who might be the real deal and who might be looking up in the coming weeks. We've seen some interesting games thus far, as we always do, but clearly MARQUEE is the right verbage of choice this Friday night.
(4-1) Ironwood Ridge
The Nighthawks have the home field advantage in this one which doesn't mean lots in Tucson high school football, but it is their home field none the less. The Lancers come in undefeated with some impressive wins along the way. Their offense missed a few beats in '07 due to youth across the board, but that appears to be on the wayside. Salpointe will have offensive confidence after putting a 42 spot on Mountain View last week. But don't sleep on that Ironwood defense, head coach Gary Minor has rested his hat on that bunch thus far and they've done him well.
(5-1) Canyon Del Oro
(3-2) Catalina Foothills
The Falcons aren't interested in dropping to five hundred six games into the season. They showed lots of offensive potential, to me, in their recent loss at Sabino. And on the other side it's the powerful CDO Dorados who are probably still in a bad mood about having a loss. Head coach Pat Nugent will have his boys focused especially since they preach anything short of a state title game appearance as short of expectations.
(5-1) Palo Verde
You want two of the state's best? You'll get two of the state's best! Sahuarita running back Allonte Singfield and Palo Verde super star Adam Hall can both score at any given time on any given play, you'll have to trust me on that. Hall has completely dominated for the Titans having scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams. To say that he makes PV go forward is the understatement of the season. Singfield will need to ignite the Mustang offensive attack if they want to keep Hall off the field on at least one side of the ball. Perhaps a shoot out between these two? Probably.
(5-0) Santa Rita
And all of a sudden this game has a little bite to it. Amphi head coach Vern Friedli has been doing this longer than most around the country. He's had to fight his share of battles to keep the Panther program competitive which took a real in the arm last week with a 7-6 upset of powerhouse Sabino. 7-6 Amphi? That was indeed the final score. And you can't help but give a round of applause to the longtime legendary coach for giving his kids the chance to win. It might be tough for Amphi with the home team Santa Rita Ealges on the other side of the ball. They continue to make us all believe in something special after the arrival of head coach Jeff Scurran. His formula might work for top Fortune 500 companies. The Ealges were grounded beyond belief before he was hired, but it's been all good ever since. The edge clearly goes to Santa Rita, but regardless it is awesome when these two legends get to play the chess match!
