On May 29, a woman told Tempe police officers that she was the victim of a theft. She reportedly had listed a diamond ring for sale on and was contacted via e-mail by a man, later identified as Joshua Morgan Thorn, 21, who claimed to be interested in purchasing it.

Police say the two parties agreed to meet at the Starbucks located at Fifth Street and Mill Avenue in Tempe. At the meeting, the woman told Thorn that the ring was recently appraised and valued at $34,000.

Thorn took the ring and held it up to the sunlight to view it. He commented on the ring then ran away with it.

During a follow-up investigation, Tempe police were able to identify Thorn as the suspect and detectives arrested him on Thursday. The ring was not recovered.

Thorn was transported to Tempe City Jail where he was booked and charged with one count of theft.
