Food fight with caterer threatens to ruin couple's wedding

PHOENIX -- A Valley couple say they are excited to be getting married. To help out, they even hired a caterer.

Now, they claim they wish they hadn't.

Cassie Town and Chris Robison have a big day coming up.

"I am very excited," Town said. "We're getting married August 29th at my grandparents' house."

The couple wanted food for their wedding guests and hired a Sedona company called Culinary Creations by Beth run by a woman named Beth Gold.

But, after signing a contract with the caterer, Robison lost his job, making it difficult to pay for such a large reception.

"He lost his second job so we definitely had to find ways to cut costs from the wedding wherever we could," Town said.

One way the couple wanted to cut costs was by reducing their catering budget. They contacted Culinary Creations by Beth and claim she agreed to downsize the order. In fact, in an e-mail, Gold says, "Generally I don't change the contract, but I will go ahead and do this for you."

"It was going to save us, probably, $700," Town said.

Things were fine until just three weeks before the wedding when the couple claim the caterer decided not to reduce the menu as she agreed.

The couple say this was a huge sticking point.

"If it was a problem, she should have let us know," Town said. "We could have figured something out. But three weeks before the wedding, that's just ridiculous."

As a result, Town and Robison tried to cancel. According to their contract, the couple would lose their $250 deposit, which was fine with them.

But they had already given Culinary Creations by Beth $1,100 and they just wanted the difference returned.

Even though the caterer has the right to keep the deposit, they say the company refuses to give the rest back.

"If she doesn't give us the money back, we're not going to have enough money to provide food for 90 people," Town said.

3 On Your Side went to Sedona and discovered Culinary Creations by Beth is operated out of a home.

We wanted to speak with Gold, but instead she sent her son out with a video camera.

When we asked if his mom was going to talk to us, the son said, "Well, we already sent an e-mail."

In that e-mail, Gold said, "I had an agreement therefore turned down numerous events for this day. This therefore means I am out even more money than the bride is claiming she is out. That is why I have a contract."

She went on to say that the contract stipulates that cancellations are subject to a 50 percent charge, which allows her to keep all the couple's money.

Gold and her company never did explain why they initially agreed in writing to reduce the menu, but later reportedly reneged just weeks before the wedding.

"I never thought in a million years we wouldn't have food a couple of weeks before our wedding," Town said. "It's kind of been a nightmare."

Town and Robison are getting married tomorrow and we wish them all the best.

In the meantime, as for their food, they have settled on lasagna trays from the grocery store.
