Diamondbacks call up infielder Brandon AllenPosted: Updated:
HOUSTON (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Brandon Allen from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
To make room on the roster, the Diamondbacks optioned infielder Josh Whitesell to their top farm team. Whitesell was hitting .194 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 108 at-bats.
The 23-year-old Allen started at first base against the Houston Astros, his first major league appearance. Allen was acquired from the Chicago White Sox for Tony Pena on July 7. He hit .324 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs in 38 games at Reno.
"He deserves a chance and we're going to stick him right in there," manager A.J. Hinch said. "Houston is where he grew up, so we're going to see what he can do."
In other news, Arizona shortstop Stephen Drew left the team to be with his pregnant wife. Hinch said he thought Drew could be back in "a couple of days."
Augie Ojeda replaced Drew in the starting lineup.
