BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. -- A Yavapai County sheriff's deputy found 200 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of a car after checking on a driver near Black Canyon City Thursday night.
Passed out driver leads to pot bust - A passed out driver led sheriff's deputies in Yavapai County to a big load of marijuana.
A deputy saw a man passed out in the driver's seat of a vehicle parked near the Coldwater Road on-ramp to Interstate 17 just before midnight Thursday.
As the deputy approached to check the man's condition, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car, which had Indiana plates.
According to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, the man, identified as William Wilkinson, 54, said he had stopped to rest on his way back to Indiana from Phoenix after visiting his brother for a few days.
When asked about the marijuana odor, Wilkinson said his brother had smoked marijuana in the car earlier that day, according to YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn.
After checking the vehicle interior, a search of the trunk revealed 11 bricks of compressed marijuana wrapped inside trash bags.
According to D'Evelyn, Wilkinson said the load of marijuana was not his and he was unaware how the drug ended up in the trunk of his car.
The estimated street value of the load is more than $200,000.
Deputies found $6,500 in cash on Wilkinson and his camera bag contained a personal use quantity of Oxycodone.
Wilkinson was arrested and booked on charges including transportation of marijuana for sale, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of narcotic drugs.
He remains in custody on a $50,000 bond.
