It happened Sunday evening at a home near Scottsdale Road and Cheney Drive.

The 4-year-old was sitting by the pool's edge when his mother left him for a few moments. While she was gone, he somehow slipped into the water.

His mother found him, pulled him out and started CPR. According to the Phoenix Fire Department, he was not breathing and had no pulse.

"This is tragically a case of a parent looking away for just those few seconds that allows a child to slip under water and go unnoticed and drown," said Capt. High Chase of the Phoenix Fire Department.

The water reportedly was not very deep, just about 3 feet. It's not clear how long the child was in the pool.

The little boy was in extremely critical condition when he was rushed to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn.
