Moyer tosses 6 scoreless innings, Phillies beat Arizona 5-1Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -- Jamie Moyer pitched six scoreless innings in relief as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 last night.
Moyer took over for Pedro Martinez, who took his spot in the starting rotation.
A 66-minute rain delay ruined Martinez's home debut with the Phillies. The three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed one run in three innings in his second start since returning to the majors.
Martinez struck out three and retired the last eight batters he faced, but left after the long delay.
Moyer gave up two singles and struck out five in his first relief appearance in five years. He also chipped in with two hits.
Diamondbacks starter Jon Garland allowed five runs and 11 hits in 5-and-a-third innings.
Game 2 of the three-game series is set for 4:05 (Arizona time) this afternoon in Philadelphia, with Diamondbacks right-hander Dan Haren starting against Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee.
