GILBERT -- A Coolidge man was shot by an off-duty Gilbert police officer after he and a woman reportedly assaulted the officer outside a Wal-Mart.

Man, woman accused of assaulting officer - In the east Valley an off-duty police officer opened fire on an alleged shoplifter at Walmart and that officer was also injured.
According to Gilbert police, the two-year officer had finished his shift at approximately 11 p.m. Sunday and was still in uniform when he attempted to contact a woman suspected of shoplifting in the Wal-Mart parking lot near Williams Field Road and Market Street.
That's when the woman, Veronica Rodriguez, 25, of Sacaton, and Therin Castillo, 27, attacked the officer.
Gilbert police Sgt. Mark Marino said the officer fired one shot at Castillo, striking him below his belt line.
Marino said Rodriguez again assaulted the officer and was arrested. She was booked on aggravated assault on a police officer and shoplifting charges.
Castillo was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officer Andrew "Chad" Biggs was treated at a hospital and released.
Biggs has been put on paid light duty because of his injuries. He has not spoken to investigators about the shooting.
Castillo and Rodriguez are out of jail pending the investigation.
The attack was caught on surveillance cameras. Police released that video on Tuesday.
