Small Phoenix high-rise fire prompts evacuationsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- About 50 people evacuated one floor of a 17-story Phoenix high-rise apartment building on Saturday afternoon after a fire broke out in construction material stored on a balcony.
Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Alex Rangel says a thick column of black smoke was visible as fire crews rushed to the landmark Camelback Towers building at Central Avenue and Camelback Road.
But firefighters quickly found that the blaze was confined to construction materials stored on the balcony of an apartment being renovated on about the seventh floor.
Rangel says about 50 people in 20 units on that floor evacuated the building; one was later overcome by heat and treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The fire was quickly extinguished and the building wasn't damaged.
