It happened Thursday night near 67th and Grand avenues.

According to police, the driver of a Dodge Magnum was speeding when he hit the semi.

Mike Carlson of Unique Heavy Recovery said the semi was making a wide right turn when the Magnum came up on the inside and hit the fuel tank. The impact sparked a fire.

Hazardous-materials teams from Glendale and Phoenix were called out to make sure there were no leaks because the semi was carrying air-conditioning units and Freon.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to the hospital.

The driver of the Dodge suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi is expected to recover.

It took five heavy wreckers to clear the scene.

The area was closed all night and into the morning, finally re-opening shortly after 7 a.m.
