Surprise boy takes 9mm pistol to elementary school

SURPRISE - Officers from the Surprise Police Department responded to an elementary school in reference to a student with a firearm.

It happened at Desert Moon Elementary School, a K-8 school located at 23251 N. 166th Drive.

Police determined that a 14-year-old had taken a 9mm semi-automatic pistol to school.

The school principal was notified after a witness saw the teen with the gun. It was found unloaded in the boy's backpack.

According to police, a witness told officers that the 14-year-old had told friends he planned to shoot the principal and hold him hostage until he gave him and his friends As in school and longer recess time.

The teen was arrested and taken to the Surprise Police Department for questioning. He may face charges of disruption of an educational institution and minor in possession of a firearm.
