Storm causes huge power outage in Ajo, Gila Bend

GILA BEND - Strong winds, up to 100 miles per hour, have left many people in Gila Bend and Ajo without power.

Storm knocks out power in Ajo, Gila Bend - Cooling stations have been set up in Ajo and Gila Bend after strong winds knocked out power to more than 2,000 APS customers.

According to Arizona Public Service the storm toppled 47 power poles and damaged nine transmission towers in the Gila Bend area around 6:15 p.m. Sunday.

Dan Wool from APS said approximately 2,300 customers are without power.

APS crews have been working through the night to restore power to residents in the areas.

APS does not have an estimated time of when power will be restored. APS did say the outage is expected to last through Monday and possibly into Tuesday and beyond for some customers.

Maricopa County Emergency Management is bringing water supplies and Red Cross along with county and local crews working to offer relief efforts.

Cooling stations are set up in Ajo and Gila Bend. The Ajo cooling station is available at Ajo High School, located at 111 Well Rd. The Gila Bend cooling station is at the Gila Bend Community Center, located at 202 N. Euclid; services will be available starting at noon today.

APS is handing out dry ice to affected customers in Ajo and Gila Bend. In Gila Bend, dry ice will be available after 1:00p.m. at the Shell station at 942 E. Pima. More than 8,000 lbs. of dry ice was distributed in Ajo this morning; more dry ice is on the way and will be distributed at the Shell station ay 429 N. 2nd Ave. late this afternoon.
