Brewer applies for stimulus education money

PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer has filed a formal application for $1 billion in federal stimulus money for education and other programs.

Brewer said Friday that the state needs the federal money to prevent teacher layoffs and help manage the state's fiscal crisis.

Brewer announced that roughly $830 million of the so-called "state fiscal stabilization fund" that must go to education will be allocated to universities, community colleges and K-12 schools in the current and next fiscal years.

Brewer has more leeway on an additional $185 million.

She says her priorities for that money include education reform, health care, children's programs, public safety and innovation, technology, and economic development.
