Defending champ Sun Devils begin title defense

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Defending NCAA softball champion Arizona State hosts San Diego State tonight in the Tempe Regional.

The Sun Devils earned the 10th national seed this season after compiling a 41-16 record.

San Diego State is 33-18.

Louisiana State and Cal State Fullerton also are playing in the Tempe Regional.

While ASU is only one year removed from its championship, the 2009 squad has a different feel from last year's team.

Five senior starters graduated after last season and the Sun Devils struggled down the stretch this year -- losing seven of eight games before winning its final two of the regular season.

ASU coach Clint Myers says he believes his team has yet to play its best softball and that everything will finally click in the postseason.
