New mom needs help with hospital bill hassle

SCOTTSDALE -- A Scottsdale woman should be enjoying time with her newborn baby. Instead, she's fighting the hospital over the delivery bill.

So, she contacted 3 On Your Side for help.

Genevieve Hass was kind of stuck between two insurance policies and that's where the problem lies. As a result, she says she is out of pocket $5,000 when she shouldn't be out any money at all.

Hass is pretty happy. After all, she gave birth recently to a little boy.

"We didn't find out what we were having so it was a big surprise," she said. "We already have a little girl, so it was really exciting."

But what isn't exciting is her ongoing billing dispute with Scottsdale Healthcare where her little boy was delivered.

"Each time I call it's just someone on the ground level and they can't help me," Hass said.

According to Hass, she and her family became eligible under Blue Cross Blue Shield's insurance plan just days before she gave birth and she hadn't received her insurance cards before she went to the hospital.

Hass says once her little boy was delivered hospital officials were in her room asking how she was going to take care of the bill.

"It's frustrating," she said. "I mean you just gave birth to a child, you went through a lot and then you have someone coming to your room asking, 'How do you want to pay for this?"

Hass says she tried telling the hospital she had insurance, but she had a hard time convincing them.

"Well, you guys don't have any group numbers or ID numbers or anything so we can't verify that for you at this time," Hass said she was told.

The hospital told Hass if she simply paid them a flat $5,000 fee for something called their special package rate they'd call it even.

And if she could later prove she had insurance the hospital would return her $5,000 that she had to put on her credit card.

But that's the problem because Hass claims the hospital won't bill her insurance company and won't return her five grand.

3 On Your Side got involved and as a result, Scottsdale Healthcare has agreed to submit Hass' bill to her insurance company and refund her money after Blue Cross Blue Shield makes the payment.

Hass says that's all she wanted the hospital to do to begin with but couldn't get anyone to listen.

"We're trying to build back up our savings and start up a college fund," Hass said. "You know, it's a significant amount."

Now, I can understand why Scottsdale Healthcare wanted to be paid something. I mean, you can't have a baby for free.

Hass just wanted them to at least submit the bill so she could eventually get her $5,000 back and it looks like that's what's going to happen.
