Summer camp for animal-loving kidsPosted: Updated:
With parents scrambling to find something for their kids to do this summer, the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA (AAWL) has the answer: Camp Ruffin' It! This exciting nine-week-long summer camp is geared toward children ages 4 -14.
Camp Ruffin' It! campers will get to meet a multitude of animalsand not just dogs and cats! We're talking about ferrets, rats, hermit crabs, Leopard geckos, desert tortoises, gerbils, chinchillas, Guinea pigs, bearded dragons, and even a Madagascar hissing cockroach!
While the main goal is to teach future generations how to be responsible pet owners, it is also a fun way for kids to see what taking care of animals is all about. Campers will learn behavior training, care and handling of a variety of animals, and valuable healthcare tips from shelter veterinarians. Campers will even get a chance to cool off from the Arizona heat by splashing around in a kiddy pool with a lucky (and soapy) pooch!
Camp Ruffin' It! will be offered a total of nine weeks beginning on June 1st.The cost of the program includes a t-shirt, snack, and materials. Our Camp Programs are:

Camp Vet (12-14) Camp Vet is a hands-on camp for 12-14 year-olds. This will be the inaugural year for the camp, which will be held for two weeks each summer, designed to offer active learning opportunities for middle school age children considering a career in animal medicine. This career discovery program will introduce campers to a wide variety of animals and the care that they require while learning what it takes to become a veterinarian. We want Campers to experience real life medicine including: Observing surgeries in our veterinary clinic Dissecting organs Learning anatomy Viewing specimens under microscopes Practicing hands on pet first aid
Exploring how animal diseases can be very different than those that effect humans. It is our responsibility to educate today's youth while encouraging them to develop a love and willingness to take action for animals in need. Through this hands-on program we hope to expose them to a side of animal medicine that they may not normally experience and foster an interest in a rewarding career. We want these future animal caregivers to walk away with an experience they will not forget! Materials and snack included Please bring a sack lunch Space is Limited!
