Woman's dream kitchen turns into nightmare after contractor abandons job

PHOENIX -- A Valley woman says her dream kitchen has turned into a complete nightmare so she contacted 3 On Your Side for help.

This was a remodeling job, but it has gone horribly wrong.

In my book, remodeling jobs are scary and I'll tell you why. You're always dealing with a large sum of money and the projects are usually big and "intense."

Those two things alone are enough to make you stress out.

Take a look at what happened to one Valley woman who wrote me.

"It's disgusting to me, everything that I see over here, it's disgusting!" Cathy Robles said.

That's pretty much how Robles feels every time she looks at what should be her "newly remodeled kitchen," a kitchen that's in shambles.

"Well, I wanted my kitchen, my dream kitchen, because believe me or not I've been waiting for this kitchen for 30 years," she said.

And she thought she'd finally get that dream kitchen when she hired a company nearly a year ago called 3 Day Granite and Cabinet.

The company is reportedly run by a guy by the name of Tom Nye and it was Nye who was supposed to remodel her entire kitchen from cabinets to appliances.

"The contract, which I do have, was for $22,000 and he said that he wanted half down, so that's what I gave him with Visa, $11,000," Robles said.

Eleven thousand dollars! And for all that money all that Robles says she's received is a kitchen in shambles with only a few cabinets that Nye installed before abandoning the job.

"I don't have anything," Robles said." I do not have the sink, I do not have the stove, I do not have anything to hold the dishes in, even if I did I don't have a sink, I don't have a stove, I don't have nothing!"

Robles says she disputed the $11,000 credit card charge, but then she says because Nye told the credit card company he had finished the job, Robles got stuck with the $11,000.

"I think it's garbage, just garbage, it's just garbage for me," she said. "This isn't worth $11,000."

So, 3 On Your Side got involved. First on our hit list -- go to Nye's business.

However, the property management company tells 3 On Your Side that Nye and his company stopped paying rent. Tom Testa, the property manager, said he had to kick Nye out.

"We're just tired of hearing it, Tom," Testa said, "We're tired of hearing the lies. I mean, give us a straight shot. If you need help, we'll help you, but don't tell me you're mailing a check!"

3 On Your Side also went to Nye's last known address in Litchfield Park, but on our last visit Nye saw us coming and sped off in his Lexus SUV before we could get answers.

However, he did call us.

"You want to take anything further, that's it because I'm getting fed up with you guys," Nye said. "I don't have time to deal with this."

He's fed up? Are you kidding? What about the kitchen he left in shambles and Robles' $11,000. I think she's pretty fed up.

"I'm crying, I'm crying because it shouldn't have ended up this way!" Robles said.

Because Robles was dealing with a contractor who was licensed when she hired him, there's a good chance she will get her money back from the Registrar of Contractors.

In the meantime, I'm sorry Tom Nye is fed up with 3 On Your Side. I'm fed up with contractors who take money and walk off the job.
