Valley couple says H R Block made a costly mistakePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - A Valley couple said they're upset because a well known tax preparer made a mistake on their taxes, so they contacted 3 On Your Side for help.
There's some finger pointing going on because the couple said H & R block made the mistake, but H & R Block said it's not their fault.
Jennifer Becker is married and has a growing family, so making sure she doesn't have to pay Uncle Sam any more taxes this year is important.
Jennifer and her husband went to H & R Block near 67th Avenue and Peoria.
And why not, H & R Block has been around for years and so have their commercials.
Jennifer said H and R Block prepared their taxes and were ecstatic to find out that she and her husband were getting a $981 refund.
"We were so excited, we went out and bought a new washer and dryer," Becker said.
But just three weeks after filing their taxes, Jennifer got a letter from the IRS.
"I was shocked," she said. "I couldn't figure out what was wrong. What went wrong."
What went wrong was that a mistake had been made and instead of getting a $981 refund, the IRS told Jennifer she was only getting $381.
Upset, Jennifer told H and R Block she wanted her $246 preparation fee returned.
After all, H and R Block has a written promise saying satisfaction guaranteed or you don't pay.
After 3 On Your Side got involved H and R Block told us that guarantee is legitimate and they do return preparation fees when they make the mistake.
But in this case, H and R Block claims it was Jennifer who provided them with inaccurate information, so there's nothing they can do.
Jennifer claims that's just not true and wants H and R Block to own up to the mistake.
"They guarantee that your satisfied or you don't pay," she said. "I'm not satisfied, so I want my money back."
3 On Your Side tried pressing H and R Block on that guarantee and they claim they would return the money.
But in this case they say they won't.
