Movie Review: He's Just Not That Into YouPosted: Updated:
Never has a guy mined so much success from a single venture as Greg Behrendt has from his book . Never mind that he was only the co-author, studios don't seem to be interested in giving his partner Liz Tucillo TV show deal after failed TV show deal. Guess they're just not that into her! I never read the book but confess that the movie looked good so I was anxious to see it. Well, I hope you like Greg Behrendt because the movie is destined to have enough success to extend his 15 minutes of fame even longer.
Like the book, the movie version of "He's Just Not That Into You" chronicles a variety of 20-30 somethings and their hap hazard attempts at understanding and communicating with members of the opposite sex. And while we do see a little bit of turmoil from the male perspective, the movie really centers on women and all the things we say and do to prop each other up and dismiss blatant signs of disinterest as much as blow up the slightest signs of interest.
The movie is painfully funny. Full screen fonts break the movie up into chapters of advice on scenarios like what to do when he won't call or when she won't have sex with you. Boasting a huge cast of knowns and unknowns, just about every type of failed relationship is featured so any and every woman can relate. Ginnefer Goodwin (Big Love) carries the bulk of the movie as a ditzy, starving-for-love gal who just can't get out of her own way or read a stop sign to save her soul! You know the type, tries so hard she scares even the interested guys off. On the other end of the spectrum is Jennifer Anniston with longtime live-in boyfriend Ben Affleck who refuses to commit to marriage and Jennifer Connelly who is happily married to Bradley Cooper. Justin Long, Drew Barrymore and Scarlett Johansson are some of the singles navigating the dating scene mine field.
This movie won't break any cinematic ground but it's more than just a series of clichs strung together. It's funny, a little sad and a very realistic portrayal of how hard it is to find a real connection or to understand the seemingly impossible opposite sex! So if you've ever wondered why he took your number but never called you back (Hello? Isn't that everybody?!), you will no doubt get a kick out of this romantic comedy. ednp

LADIES ROOM LOWDOWN: "That was cute!" "It was cute!" Women leaving the movie couldn't wait to comment on it to their girlfriends. There was even applause at the end of the screening I attended. The ooo's and ahhh's along with the sighs that punctuated various scenes were proof that the audience was really into this movie.
On a side note, if you're having trouble interpreting his date speak, the movie folks have provided you with this meter to determine if "He's Just Not That Into You'!
