NCAA committee admonishes ASU baseball coach and 2 ex-players over fake fightPosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- The NCAA Administrative Committee has publicly admonished Arizona State baseball coach Pat Murphy and two former players for staging a fake fight before a super regional game against Fresno State.
ASU lost an appeal of the sanction, resulting in the admonishment this week.
The Sun Devils lost the deciding game of the best-of-three super regional 12-9 on June 9th in Tempe and did not advance to the College World Series, which Fresno State won.
ASU star players Brett Wallace and Ike Davis faked a scuffle on the field before the game in an apparent attempt to loosen up the Sun Devils and shock Fresno State.
Murphy says in retrospect that it was a poor decision and the program must always take responsibility for its actions.
NCAA officials say no additional penalties were assessed.
