Arizona prison guard dies on wildfire dutyPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona Department of Corrections says a prison guard who was working with an inmate firefighting crew has died while fighting a blaze near Lake Havasu City.
Douglas Falconer was working on a fire on the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge when he collapsed shortly after beginning to work the fire line on Wednesday. Corrections spokesman Bill Lamoreaux says he died of apparent natural causes despite lifesaving efforts by fellow crewmembers.
Falconer was assigned to an inmate firefighting team based in Globe. Crews generally have a corrections sergeant and two officers working alongside more than a dozen inmates.
The 46-year-old Globe resident first joined the corrections department in 2004 and is survived by his wife.
