MARCICOPA -- A Maricopa police officer is in the hospital after his patrol car was plowed into following a traffic stop Monday morning.

UNCUT: SUV driver rear-ends parked police car - According to police, a driver took her attention off the road for a moment and rear-ended a Maricopa police car parked for a traffic stop.
It happened about 9:45 a.m. at Smith Enke Road and Vintage Road in Maricopa.
According to Sgt. Stephen Judd, Officer Andy Leach had returned to his police vehicle after completing a traffic stop when his car was struck from behind by an SUV traveling at approximately 45 to 50 mph.
Judd said Leach's police car's emergency lights were still activated.
Officer Leach was taken to the hospital with serious injuries to his head and neck but is expected to be OK.
The driver of the SUV, identified as 31-year-old Jodi Blakeman, suffered minor injuries to her face. A toddler in the vehicle was not hurt, but both were taken to the hospital to be checked out.
The vehicle that was the object of the traffic stop had already left the scene when the collision occurred.
Judd said that a preliminary investigation shows that the driver had taken her attention off the road for a moment to deal with her child.
The collision is under investigation.
