Brewer: Use stimulus cash for child-care subsidiesPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer wants the state to use federal stimulus money to erase budget cuts suspending child care subsidies for thousands of low-income families.
State governors have direct say over most stimulus dollars, but Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman said the planned use of $25 million this fiscal year would require legislative approval.
Senseman says Brewer has asked top legislative leaders to send her a bill within several weeks to reverse part of the budget cut absorbed by the Department of Economic Security in the current fiscal year.
Other than money for highway projects and health care for the poor, Brewer's decision to use stimulus dollars for child-care subsidies is one of the first moves by state officials to tap the new funding source.
