Somerton employees facing unpaid holidaysPosted: Updated:
YUMA -- City employees in the southwestern Arizona community of Somerton won't be getting paid holidays for the remainder of this fiscal year.
The City Council approved the move as part of an effort to make sure the city ends the year with a balanced budget. The fiscal year runs through June 30.
City Administrator Bill Lee says the unpaid holidays will help Somerton avoid the need to cut jobs.
The council also voted to cut police officers' and firefighters' salaries by 2.3 percent for the remainder of the fiscal year.
