Man dead but unknown if killed by police or selfPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - One man is dead after a standoff at a Phoenix apartment.
Officers were responding to a domestic call Saturday afternoon at an apartment near 23rd Avenue and Indian School.
That is when a man, identified as 23-year-old Joshua Hoyt, reportedly began shooting at police, who then returned fire.
The vicinity had to be evacuated for hours. The SWAT team was called in but when they made entry into the man's apartment they discovered the suspect was dead.
Juan Aguilar, who lives by the suspect, tells 3TV, "There was a bunch of commotion and stuff and that's when all the shooting started. They were by my arcadia window, the gunshot and stuff."
It is unclear if the suspect was killed by police or a self-inflicted gun shot wound. Hoyt recently served four years in prison on convictions of felony vehicle theft and weapons misconduct. He was paroled in September. The sheriff's department provided 3TV with a mugshot of Hoyt from 4 years ago when he was initially arrested.
An investigation into the standoff is underway.
