PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Police Department is getting 80 new high-powered assault rifles and beat officers will spend the next several months training on them.

Once the initial training is complete on the AR-15 Bushmaster assault rifles, officers will be required to take quarterly course to keep up their marksmanship skills.

The police department said it could take until January to provide the patrol officers who will be using the rifles the same training as specialty units like SWAT teams.

With the 80 new weapons, Phoenix police precincts will have access to more than 200 rifles.
