Elderly couple injured when train hits car in Surprise

SURPRISE -- A train hit a car carrying an elderly couple in Surprise Friday morning.

According to the Surprise Police Department, an elderly couple in a Cadillac were at the intersection of Dysart Road and Grand Avenue.

Surprise police Sgt. Mark Ortega said the crossing arm came down on top of the vehicle. The driver decided to pull forward and was struck by the train. That caused the car to spin into a pole.

The couple were extricated from the car and flown to St. Joseph's Hospital with serious injuries.

Their conditions are not known at this time.
